The kids recently held a small ceremony to become members of the Kindness Club, based on the book by Bernadette Russell - Do Nice, Be Kind, Spread Happy: Acts of Kindness for Kids, which is filled with fantastic ideas of how to commit acts of 'ninja niceness'. Then off they went to complete their first mission: to feed the stray cats and dogs at the local temple.
Sadly, there is a huge problem with stray animals here on Koh Samui; street dogs and cats are continuously having litters. While there are rescue centres on the island for emergency cases, many find refuge in the temples where monks are tolerant and they are generally safe from the busy road and abuse. The temples are peaceful and shady and, often, unwanted animals are dropped off here by the locals so they have a chance to survive.
We arrived in the temple grounds and, after a shaky start, in which one dog was positively grumpy when we offered him food and a cat ran for his life when we carefully approached him, we found some cats who happily tucked in!
We also met this extremely timid female dog who really wanted food but was afraid if we got close. She won all of our hearts and we hope we can start to make friends with her when return in the weeks to come.
First mission complete, well done Ninjas of Niceness!
